Want to gain a competitive advantage and not be left behind when the quantum revolution happens? This module will explain the applications of quantum physics, and the potential that it has for creating disruptive technologies from both non-technical and technical perspectives. Learners will explore how atoms and light can be used to compute, sense, and transmit quantum information, as well as the data security threat quantum computers pose to some current encryption. This module is suitable for both non-technical and technical audiences.

Quantum Sensors are a form of quantum technology that have been commercially available for over a decade. There are a variety of sensor types but they all have a common property: they have far greater sensitivity compared to a classical sensor due to quantum properties (i.e. by leveraging the properties of atoms and/or light). This technical module will present the key distinctions between quantum and classical sensors, as well as use cases for the energy sector, mineral exploration, healthcare, navigation and hidden object detection. This module will include the quantum physics behind the technology, and is suitable for a STEM background without any prior quantum knowledge.

Engineers are interested in understanding real world case studies that are directly related to, or can transfer over to, their industry’s pain points. This technical module will explore applications of a form of quantum computing called quantum annealing that can be used to solve complex optimization problems. Qubo will present use cases relevant to several industries, such as transportation and logistics optimization, balancing financial portfolios, fraud detection, optimizing insurance premiums, and improving energy management. This module will include the quantum physics behind the technology, and is suitable for a STEM background without any prior quantum knowledge.

Did you know that there is currently a global Quantum Space Race? Multiple countries already have, or will soon launch, Quantum space missions that have satellites equipped with quantum communication technologies, including Canada! The Canadian Space Agency’s Quantum Encryption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat) mission will be Canada’s 1st Quantum Communication Satellite, launching in late 2026. It’s not possible to create a global Quantum Network using only ground-based terrestrial connections (free-space or fibre) due to line-of-sight limitations and transmission loss. Learners will explore some current space-based Quantum Networks, and the QEYSSat mission (i.e. trusted-node Quantum Key Distribution with one satellite & two Quantum Ground Stations). This module is suitable for both non-technical and technical audiences.

Due to the potential vulnerability of certain public key encryption methods to a quantum computer attack within the next 5–15 years, there is an immediate need for quantum-secure data encryption. In addition, Quantum Information is extremely fragile and therefore needs a specialized network (the Quantum Internet) to transmit, manipulate, and store the qubits to maintain their integrity. This technical module will present the special quantum properties that makes quantum communication so powerful, as well as current development/use cases in the field (i.e. level of maturity, expected availability). This module will include the quantum physics behind the technology, and is suitable for a STEM background without any prior quantum knowledge.

Intro to Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)

A real-life quantum demonstration of the famous Young’s Double Slit experiment. Learners will have the chance to view a live optics experiment being performed in real time. They will be able to ask questions, get a close-up look, and participate in the experiment. This module is suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences. Qubo has designed this demonstration to show several quantum effects:

Wave-Particle duality
The Observer Effect

Learners will also be taught important points about setting up and running an optics experiment. Future lab interns will not want to miss this!
