The ripple effect from these technologies becoming commercialized could disrupt every industry, which is why governments around the globe are encouraging businesses to start developing quantum literacy.

This technical course introduces fundamental concepts in quantum physics relevant to today’s quantum industry. Learners will explore what properties exist in the quantum world that can be manipulated for disruptive quantum technology.

Engineers are interested in understanding real world case studies that are directly related to, or can transfer over to, their industry’s pain points.

This technical course will explore applications of a form of quantum computing called quantum optimization that can be used to solve complex optimization problems.

Qubo will present use cases relevant to several industries, such as transportation and logistics, finance and the energy sector. 

A real-life quantum demonstration of the famous Young’s Double Slit experiment. Learners will have the chance to view a live optics experiment being performed in real time. They will be able to ask questions, get a close-up look, and participate in the experiment.

Qubo has designed this demonstration to show several quantum/optical effects, such as interference, superposition and the Observer effect. Learners will also be taught important points about setting up and running an optics experiment. Future lab interns will not want to miss this!

Quantum Sensors are a form of quantum technology that have been commercially available for over a decade. There are a variety of sensor types but they all have a common property: they have far greater sensitivity compared to a classical sensor due to quantum properties (i.e. by leveraging the properties of atoms and/or light).

This technical course will present the key distinctions between quantum and classical sensors, as well as use cases for the energy sector, mineral exploration, navigation and hidden object detection.

Nearly every industry requires precise & reliable Position, Navigation & Timing (PNT) devices, including sectors like healthcare, defense, finance, manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, and communication. There are powerful quantum sensors that can provide navigational info in GPS-denied environments with improved stability & accuracy over conventional GPS.

Furthermore, quantum sensors have reduced Size, Weight & Power (SWaP), making them very attractive for the space industry. This technical 2-hr course will give a more in-depth overview of real-world quantum PNT devices, and their current use cases.

Hidden object detection sounds like sci-fi but this is a real form of quantum sensing. Classical RADAR and LiDAR can have detection limitations, and struggle to measure weaker signals against strong background noise. Quantum LiDAR uses quantum sources and detectors to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, making object detection possible in previously impossible scenarios.

Also, exploiting special quantum properties like entanglement and superposition allows for the detection of obstructed objects. This technical 2-hr course is for engineers interested in a deeper understanding of Quantum LiDAR and applications of this technology.

Due to the potential vulnerability of certain public key encryption methods to a quantum computer attack, there is an immediate need for data encryption that is 100% secure by quantum physics. In addition, quantum information is extremely fragile and therefore needs specialized hardware to transmit, manipulate, and store the qubits to maintain their quantum state.

This technical course introduces fundamental concepts in quantum communication. Learners will explore the differences between classical and quantum communication, overview of terrestrial (fibre, free space) and space-based (satellite) quantum links, what is the Quantum Internet, and why Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is theoretically 100% secure.

This will be taught through the lens of the most promising intended uses for quantum communication.

What is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)? How is this encryption protocol practically implemented in the field? This technical 2-hr course is for engineers interested in a more in-depth understanding of real-world QKD, as it pertains to terrestrial and satellite-based secure communications.

Learners will be introduced to both prepare-and-measure (BB84 protocol) and entanglement-based (BBM92 protocol) schemes. We will also introduce some known vulnerabilities in a physical QKD system (i.e. quantum hacking), and how to mitigate these attacks.

Quantum information is extremely fragile and therefore needs specialized hardware to transmit, manipulate, and store the photonic qubits to maintain their quantum state. This technical 2-hr course introduces terrestrial-based quantum communication networks.

Learners will explore the differences between classical and quantum communication, what is the Quantum Internet, and gain an overview of current terrestrial-based quantum networks (fibre, free-space and underwater). This will be taught through the lens of the most promising intended uses for quantum communication.

It’s not possible to create a global quantum network using only terrestrial (free-space or fibre) connections due to line-of-sight limitations and transmission loss. Multiple countries already have, or will soon launch, quantum space missions that have satellites equipped with quantum communication technologies (i.e. quantum transceiver).

The Canadian Space Agency’s Quantum Encryption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat) mission will be Canada’s 1st quantum communication satellite, launching in 2026. This technical 2-hr course will give an overview of current space-based quantum networks, and explain the QEYSSat mission (i.e. trusted-node Quantum Key Distribution with one satellite & two Quantum Ground Stations). 

While QKD is theoretically 100% secure, the physical implementations of these protocols can have security vulnerabilities. This technical 2-hr course will review some common quantum hacking techniques and how to mitigate these hacks, including the intercept-&-resend or “man-in-the-middle” attack, detector blinding attacks, and the potential security flaws caused by having biased randomness in a QKD system.

Learners will explore Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) and how they can improve QKD device security, as well as the security of current distributed smart devices and IoT.
