*This course is a prerequisite for all Tier II Quantum Communication courses
Due to the potential vulnerability of certain public key encryption methods to a quantum computer attack, there is an immediate need for data encryption that is 100% secure by quantum physics.
In addition, Quantum Information is extremely fragile and therefore needs specialized hardware to transmit, manipulate, and store the qubits to maintain their quantum state.
This technical course introduces fundamental concepts in quantum communication. Learners will explore the differences between classical and quantum communication, overview of terrestrial (fibre, free space) and space-based (satellite) quantum links, what is the Quantum Internet, and why Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is theoretically 100% secure.
This will be taught through the lens of the most promising intended uses for Quantum Communication.
Optional Quantum Company spotlight: Guest speaker presents a demo/overview of their Quantum Technology (3-hr).
